Have you ever wanted a pillow on a long car trip? I can never get comfortable and sleep in the car, my neck is always at a funny angle and then I wake up with a stiff neck. This pillow is the perfect solution to this problem and so easy to make. I made one on the snow day with my friend and it took us less than an hour. Now you can make one with these directions and supplies.

Things you will need:

  • Fabric :720 square inches.
    • I used two extra pieces my mom wasn’t using that were 8” wide by 45” long. You could also use one piece that is 16” x 45”. (FYI a standard bolt of fabric is around 45” wide)
  • Thead of your choice.
  • Sewing machine or hand stitch if you do not have a sewing machine.
  • If hand sewing then you will need a needle or two.
  • Stuffing (This is a personal preference based on how full you want the pillow)
  • Iron
  • Scissors
  • Sewing pins

First I took my 16” x 45” piece fabric and folded it in half. Now I decided how long and wide I wanted my travel pillow. I choose to do mine at 8”wide by 45” long. After you choose now take your scissors and cut your fabric to that length. Then you can go and iron your fabric if its a little wrinkled and to make sure everything is flat and lined up. After you iron it, you can start pinning your two pieces of fabric together with your sewing pins and make sure they are facing in, right sides together.

Now you are ready to sew. I did this on a sewing machine. You can also hand sew but this will take considerably more time and patience. I set up my sewing machine with thread that matched my fabric. I used the ¼” mark as my sewing guide and started the seam with a backstitch to secure the thread. I sewed around the perimeter of the pillow but left a 4-5” opening so the pillow can be turned inside out and stuffed.Once I turned the pillow right sides out I stuffed the pillow to desired firmness. Now you need to close the opening, you can do this by hand using a whip stitch or turn the edges in and sew the opening on the machine lining it up on the edge as close as possible.I didn’t do either of these, I put a hair tie around it to close it.

I have been enjoying my pillow this past week. I hope you will enjoy your new pillow just as much. Happy crafting!
