You might have seen those cool woven looking hanging stuff on people’s houses. They have beads, pom poms, yarn and sometimes even chimes or pieces of glass! It looks nice, but it’s a hard activity that requires a lot of patience.

In some Native American cultures, the dreamcatcher is a handmade hoop out of willow with a woven net or web. The dreamcatcher has beads and feathers on it, which are sacred items. The dreamcatchers were not only made to capture and fend off nightmares, and evil dreams, but also evil spirits, or black magic.

To make this woven amulet, you need:

  • Yarn (Depends on how many colors you want, I only used two bushels)
  • A needle (optional, but recommended)
  • Anything that is a metal circle(bangle, aluminum ring. I used wire and hot glued the endes to make a circle)
  • Hot glue gun
Anything you want to make it look traditional! (I used pom poms, feathers, and beads)

First, if you (like me) took a piece of wire, you take the wire and bend it to make a circle. Hot glue the ends together. Wait until the hot glue dries. If you couldn’t find any wire, you could even use a paper plate rim. You can even use a spiral wire (I did this), and unwind it. After the ring is done drying, take one of the yarn bushels and tie it on to the ring. Wrap the yarn around the ring tightly until the whole ring is covered with the yarn. Mentally draw even spaces,(5 or 4). Take the second bushel of yarn and thread it through the needle’s eye.

Tie the end of the piece of yarn to the ring. Take the needle and go to the spot that you measured out. Keep on knotting. Do this until the 4 or 5 loops are showing. Slip the needle through the loops. Make the knots and loops tighter the closer each side is to each other. Take a bead or pom pom (If you aren’t using these materials, you can skip this part) and push the needle through it. Tie the yarn to all of the sides. You are done with the front part!

Cut out the same measurement of each string. You can decide what color. Take your traditional materials and put them through these pieces of yarn. Attach the decorated pieces to the same mental places that you had earlier. Next, take 4 or 5 pieces of yarn and attach those to your mental places as well. Tie all of the pieces together. Now, take the paper clip and unwind it a little. Attach the still looped part through the tied pieces. You have a dreamcatcher!

I hung my dreamcatcher on a vent that is right above my bed. I think that it was a time consuming activity, and I did make it when I was bored on a snowday. I think that I could have used more colors, or done it in a pattern, because my ring was blue and the rest of the dreamcatcher was yellow. Overall, I think this was a really nice activity. If you need to see instructions by eye, then you can go to YouTube, there are many tutorials there.
