Everyone has a favorite movie. Whether they enjoy it because of nostalgia value or because they connected with it everyone has a movie the absolutely adore. My favorite movie is The Skeleton Twins. It’s about two twins, Maggie and Milo, who both cheat death on the same day. This prompts them to reunite after 10 years of not talking. They then have to learn how to reconnect and survive together. Although it can get heavy at times it’s amazingly enjoyable. With a beautifully developed plot, realistic characters, and absolutely stunning visuals it’s truly worthy of your time.

Despite the fact that the movie is based on very heavy themes it’s uplifting. Maggie and Milo go through a lot, they’re depressed, they’re suicidal, their father committed suicide when they were young, which Maggie seems to think may have been the source of all their problems. But they always had each other. The movie opens with Maggie saying “maybe we were doomed from the beginning.” Maybe they were doomed from the beginning, but they were doomed together. When. In the beginning, Maggie offers to let Milo stay with her to make sure he’s okay. They’re bound together, they’re siblings, they’re supposed to be there for each other. After all that happens to them, seeing old friends, getting hurt, fighting with each other, they still end up together. Milo’s there for Maggie throughout the movie, no matter what happens. The end of the movie isn’t the end for Maggie and Milo, they keep going and they keep going together.

Maggie as she works up the courage to kill herself at the beginning movie.

Maggie, even though she messed up a lot, wasn’t a bad person. She just doesn’t realize what she’s doing is wrong. Maggie always had this outlook of “Milo’s worse than me, but it could be worse for him”. Milo didn’t help this by putting her on a pedestal, just accepting when she snaps and even shifting all the blame to himself. He lets her continue in her self-destructive behavior for most of the movie. Maggie didn’t realize she was a mess until she gets yelled at, which prompted her to say some seemingly unforgivable things. Despite all this Maggie isn’t a bad person. She’s sad and messed up, simply just a victim of circumstance. All she really needs to do is realize that she maybe isn’t the best person and she can fix that.

On the other hand Milo seems to understand he’s messed up, he wants to get better. He accepts Maggie’s offer to go to New York with her, knowing it wouldn’t be good for him to be alone. He keeps trying to get better, to be happy, but he keeps getting dragged back down. At points he gets really low and at points he’s on top of the world. But he never stops trying. At the beginning he’s a suicidal dude who had his heart broken, and at the end he’s a suicidal dude who had his heart broken. But in the end he’s with Maggie, and he knows everythings not gonna be fixed in a heartbeat, but he’s more than willing to try.

One big reason The Skeleton Twins is absolutely incredible is because of the scenery throughout. The movie is set mainly in fall, giving it a cold feeling. But it also gives it the ability to draw on oranges in the happier scenes, giving it a warm feeling. In the sadder scenes it relies more on the gloomy nature of cold weather with teals and blues to give it a dark and gloomy feeling, like it seems it’s been for Maggie and Milo’s entire life. But, on the day they both make the decision to end their life the sun seems to be shining bright. This shows that everyday is the same, it doesn’t matter whether it’s gloomy or sunny. It’s just the same thing repeating itself, and it doesn’t stop for anyone or anything. Overall the movie was just gorgeous, it gives you a sense of calm, it makes it seem that no matter what happens everything will be okay.

The Skeleton Twins is a movie that I’ll never grow tired of, along with what’s been stated there’s so much more that makes this movie amazing. There’s always things that could’ve been improved on but the positives far outweigh the negatives here. Being a movie with only a 1 million dollar budget, that was shot in just 22 days, it’s incredible how it turned out. It’s been nominated for and won awards and it’s well rated on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes but people seemed to forget it after a couple of years. There are definitely people who still enjoy it but they’re few and far between. It’s absolutely worth the watch and I encourage you to check it out.
