During the school year a group of kids come together every monday and wednesday to play different instruments including the trumpet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, bass, bass guitar, electric guitar, flute, and others. During the year they play over 10 concerts and please the crowd with the time and effort they put into the songs they’ve practiced and performed.

In jazz band students play over 10 concerts, hang out with friends, and overall have a great time. But to get involved in all of this, they must first audition. To audition they must be at least in 7th grade, sign up at Mr Wright’s staff page, choose their instrument, and play it live for Mr Wright. “There are some years where they have stronger players or stronger sections than others, which creates an ebb and flow, but it evens out in the end.” Says Jazz Band director Garry Wright.

Mr. Wright and his wife. He has been the jazz band director for many years.

Lots of people are familiar with the jazz band, especially if they are in eighth grade. But, if they’re in seventh grade, they’re obviously  not familiar with the whole thing and have some room to improve. “I joined the jazz band late,” says seventh grader Drew Awtry, “so it was a bit hard getting used to it the first time I was there.”

Also, if they’re good enough in either 7th/8th grade band, or jazz band, they can audition for All District Jazz Band. All District jazz band auditions are on January 5th, 2019, hosted by David Keller. All district jazz band provides a challenge for the top students in their class/grade band. To register,  students along with their parents need to fill outregistration form online. Auditions also cost 7 dollars per instrument.

In April, students in jazz band need to take an assessment which takes place through April 27-28th at Briar Woods High School. Jazz band directors will register each student. Information will be emailed to them in January regarding this event.

Overall, the jazz band is just a fun and a mostly challenging experience

These are a variety of band instruments, such as the Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, and Trombone. These have all been commonly used in the jazz band.

for everyone involved. It also gives an experience for people if they want to pursue their chosen instrument when they get older.
