After a long NFL season, the Super Bowl has ended and we have finally crowned a champion, the New England Patriots. The Super Bowl was played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in Atlanta, Georgia on February 3rd, 2019. This is the Patriots 3rd straight Super Bowl appearance, whereas the Rams played in their first Super Bowl since 2002.

The New England Patriots have had a decent season with only 11 wins and 5 losses. The Patriots started off the regular season with two devastating losses and many were questioning whether or not Tom Brady will be able to get the Patriots back in the Super Bowl. After their two weeks of misery, the Patriots finally got it together. After winning the next six games, their streak came to an end after losing to

the Tennessee Titans 34-10. Three weeks later, they lost again to the Miami Dolphins, then to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Overall the Patriots season was a pretty good but it was not like some of their Super Bowl teams a couple of years ago. “I was cheering for the Patriots because I’ve been a Patriot fan since I was a little kid, and my dad is from Boston and his whole side of the family,” gym teacher Daniel Gavin said.

This season, the Los Angeles Rams had a lot of ups and downs during the season going 13-3. However, their first 8 games of the year made the Rams look unbeatable. Throughout that span, both Jared Goff and Todd Gurley looked like MVPs. However, they lost to the New Orleans Saints 35-45, and a couple of games after that, the Rams had two straight losses to the Bears and the Eagles. After those rough stretch of games, the Rams won the next two and finished the season 13-3 for a #2 seed in the playoffs. “I was cheering for the Rams because I didn’t want the Patriots to win again,” seventh-grader Sianna Eaves said.

Before the game even started people were already hyped for a matchup between the NFC Champions Rams and the AFC Champions Patriots. Right when the game started, both offenses were struggling. When Patriots’ QB Tom Baby threw an interception to Rams’ LB Cory Littleton, we knew that the Rams would score a touchdown. But sadly, that never happened, and the Rams punted about a minute later. Later in the quarter, the Patriots got something going and K. Stephen Gostkowski kicked a field goal to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead. After the halftime show, which was performed by Maroon 5, Travis Scott, and Big Boi, the Rams scored a quick field goal to tie the game 3-3. Late in the 4th quarter, Patriots’ running back Sony Michel rushed for a touchdown with about 5:30 left in the game. The next drive the Rams drove all the way down the field to the 20-yard line. However, the Rams WR Brandin Cooks dropped the game-tying touchdown pass. Jared Goff threw a pass which was then intercepted by Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. “I thought that the Rams were going to win,” seventh-grader Nura Warsame said.

Overall, the Super Bowl this year was a very unpredictable one, with both teams scoring 16 points, total making it the least scoring Super Bowl in NFL history. But in the end, the Patriots ended up winning 13-3. Along with that, the Patriots are now tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl wins. Even though the Rams lost this year, there’s still hope for them in the next few seasons.
