The N.H.L, the road to the playoffs, the Stanley Cup. Who will win? Who will lose? Who’s in? Who’s out? All your hockey questions answered here!

What Are The Playoffs?

In the N.H.L playoffs there are a total of 16 teams in the playoffs. Two teams play each other, and the first to win four games advances to the next round. There are three rounds to the Stanley Cup Final. In the National Hockey League, there are four divisions: Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific. The best three teams of each division and two wild cards from each respective conference advanced to the playoffs.

Key Match-Ups from Round 1:

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Columbus Blue Jackets

This matchup was predicted to be one of the greatest playoff rounds in the N.H.L., but sometimes things turn out differently. The Pittsburgh Penguins quickly won Games 1, 2, and 3, but the Blue Jackets decided they weren’t ready to leave the playoffs and won Game 4 in Columbus with a score of 5-4. In order for the Blue Jackets to advance to the next round, they would have had to win the rest of their series against the Penguins. Unfortunately, for the Blue Jackets, the Penguins knocked them out in Game 5 and won the round with a score of 5-2.

Washington Capitals vs Toronto Maple Leafs

The Washington Capitals are the #1 seed (and the Presidents’ Trophy winners) while the Toronto Maple Leafs are the #8 seed. You would have thought the Capitals would have swept the Leafs out of the playoffs in four games easily, but that wasn’t the case. The young Maple Leafs won Games 2 and 3 to take a 2-1 lead. The Capitals, held on in regulation to take a 3-2 lead. In game 6 the Leaf’s scored first with a goal by nineteen year-old phenom, Austin Matthews, and then Marcus Johansson in the third period leaving it tied 1- 1. The game remained tied and went into overtime. At 6:31 minutes left in overtime, Marcus Johansson scored his second goal, ending the game with the Capitals going on to round 2 to face the Pittsburgh Penguins!
